Filmed at Carolina Beach State Park, this environmental essay film explores the hidden truths behind those who can no longer speak for themselves. These are the stories that waves can tell, but only to those who listen. "The Stories Waves Can Tell" was part of the official selection at the Visions 10 Film Festival & Conference (March 24th-28th, 2021), the Reel Teal Film Festival (February 25th, 2022), the Flint Youth Film Festival (July 1st-31st), and will be presented at the GutterCast Film Festival (August 25th, 2022) and the Surfalorus Film Festival (September 18th-21st), Black Cat Award International Film Festival in Bolivia (November 11th, 2022), and Student World Impact Film Festival (November 13th, 2022). This film has also been presented within the UNCW Creative Arts Club's Inside Voices Spring Showcase (April 29th, 2022), shown at the Millennium Film Workshop in Brooklyn, NY (May 27th, 2022), and was professionally curated within the State of the Art exhibition at the Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington, NC (April 8th-September 18th, 2022). "Layers" is a short rotoscope animation project that utilizes creative crowdsourcing. The original motion footage was acted by students within the Fall 2019 Class of FST 334. Additionally, the story was created by the class by using an interactive "Pass the Story" approach, in which one person starts the story and then passes it onto the next person within the class to continue it. Thereafter, the film was broken into over 422 individual frames where the students and crowdsourced artists physically rotoscoped over them with their own creative vision for the frames given to them. The soundscape for this project was also broken into sections, where students created short audio segments for their specific portion. However, all animated frames and audio segments were created separately from each other. Lastly, everything was combined together within the video to create an amalgamation of imaginative layers.
